Our Junior Interior Designer: Lucy Clements
Meet our Junior Interior Designer Lucy Clements. When working on a project, Lucy, as one of our gifted and accomplished designers, contributes a wealth of expertise and creative ideas.
In this interview, you'll hear her thoughts on her creative process, how she keeps up to date with the latest interior design trends and some of her most memorable projects.
What inspired you to become an interior designer?
I have always loved interiors and architecture and appreciated well-designed spaces. Talking to other interior designers also inspired me a lot - hearing about all the projects they did and what they involve in.
Describe your experience as an interior designer.
I love being an interior designer because every day is different and there is always a balance between design, meetings, office days, days on site, networking, meeting suppliers and so much more. I enjoy the variety of each day.
Which are the most important factors when designing a room?
Getting a balance of textures is key and it is what gives a space depth and interest. Light is also key when designing a room and plays a big part in the feel of the space and the effects of colour and texture. Artwork and styling also have a huge impact on the final look and are what transform a design into a home, and are where you can add luxury and points of interest.
Which is your favourite project (finished or ongoing) and why?
I really enjoy getting concepts together and thinking of all the exciting things we can do with the space. But the best part is seeing it all come together and how happy a client is with their new home.
Could you ever prioritize aesthetics over function when designing a room?
I think it really depends on how the room is going to be used and who the end user is. But hopefully, you can get the best of both where the aesthetic and functionality can work together and enhance each other.
How do you keep up-to-date with the latest trends in interior design?
I love the magazines - Elle Decor, Architectural Digest, and Interiors mag. But I get most of my inspiration from Instagram where I follow designers I love.
Which are your top 3 favourite home brands?
Holly Hunt, Ralph Lauren Home, Hermes, Soho Home, Restoration Hardware.
Which is your current favourite interior design inspiration photo?
I always love images by Albion Nord and find that I regularly use them as inspiration.
Where is your favourite place to be, when you want to get inspired?
I find travel very inspiring for design. I also find eating out at well-designed restaurants and going to events and gallery exhibitions very inspiring too.
What is your dream home style?
I love working with old-grade listed homes with high ceilings and traditional architectural details, and contrasting this with more modern furniture, art, and contrasting textures - whether in Paris or London! I also love the Californian style of very open plan and a fresh but earthy feel like Amber Interiors.
Where in the world have you stayed where interior design & architecture has really stood out, and why?
I always find design and architecture in Italy really stand out to me. I love the neoclassical style and feel of balance that a lot of the architecture has.
Home is ...
For me, home is the space you feel is designed for you and your needs personally as the end user, where you feel comfortable and can fully relax. A balance of comforting spaces and spaces to entertain and host.
