What inspired you to become an interior designer?

Growing up, I was always surrounded by art and design as my mum was a fashion designer and owned her own boutique. Despite being a common perception in my culture that art was not a viable career path, I was passionate about pursuing it. Initially, I had plans to become an architect but while touring a university, I was drawn to the Interior Design course and decided to go for it. After graduating, I got an internship at one of London's most prestigious interior design studios, I fell in love with creating beautiful residential spaces and I've been hooked on this industry ever since!

Describe your experience as an interior designer.

I have had the opportunity to work at various interior design studios, both large and boutique. However, I find the most creative control and job satisfaction in working for a smaller studio. As a creative, I appreciate the fact that not one day is the same and there is always something new and exciting to work on. One of the best aspects of my job is being able to see beautiful finishes being used in everyday items and meeting knowledgeable and skilled people from all over the world. Early on in my career, I discovered my passion for creating bespoke furniture, and I would say that is now one of my biggest strengths as an interior designer.

Which are the most important factors when designing a room?

There are a few things to keep in mind before designing a space. First off, the room has to be functional and serve its purpose. A bedroom should be cozy and relaxing, while a living room should be perfect for unwinding and entertaining. We also have to make sure the room not only looks good but also feels good.

Another very important thing to keep in mind is the size of the furniture and other elements in the room. We don’t want things to look out of proportion or too small/big for the space.

Last but not least, I can’t emphasize how important lighting is. We have to make sure there's enough natural light coming in, but also consider a mixture of interesting lighting fixtures to set the mood. But really, the most important thing is to make sure the room meets the needs and preferences of the person who will be using it. If they're happy, I have done the job right!

Which is your favorite project (finished or ongoing) and why?

I've been lucky enough to work on some really amazing projects throughout my career, but one of my absolute favorites has to be the Chelsea Barracks Townhouse. It was such an exciting project to be a part of, and the result was absolutely stunning.

How would you prioritize tasks for a renovation project?

Once we have had our initial meeting with the client to establish a design brief, we can then create a timeline of the project which has so far been an important factor to consider how I prioritize tasks for the duration of the project.

Would you ever prioritize aesthetics over function when designing a room?

There may be instances where aesthetics and function may seem to conflict with each other. However, it is my responsibility to find a solution that satisfies both requirements. By creatively problem-solving and thinking outside the box, it is possible to create a space or furniture pieces that are not only visually stunning but also practical and functional.

How do you keep up-to-date with the latest trends in interior design?

Pinterest and Instagram have completely changed the way we can find inspiration and connect with other designers. I also really enjoy attending workshops by our trusted suppliers to learn about new techniques, products, and trends.

Which are your top 3 favorite home brands?

I have been really enjoying specifying pieces from the Invisible Collection at the moment as their pieces are a definition of quirky, luxury, and comfort. Soho Home is a great one for timeless furniture and Amara is for elegant accessories.

Which is your current favorite interior design inspiration photo?

Images from a private residence in Milan by Vincenzo De Cotiis where they used metal for skirting and architraves creating a very unique and contemporary feel. Metal can be associated with coldness but it has been perfectly balanced with the use of other materials.

Where is your favorite place to be, when you want to get inspired?

There isn’t a specific place that comes to mind when answering this question. I believe inspiration has a knack for finding us when we least anticipate it, much like stumbling upon something truly remarkable. However, I must emphasize the importance of traveling in order to stay inspired.

What is your dream home style?

That is a very tough question to answer as there are so many designs I love. The best part of being an interior designer is that you can live your dreams through your projects. I would say that I would love to have high ceilings for beautiful chandeliers and pair a very minimal and laid-back design with some rich Pakistani statement pieces.

Where in the world have you stayed where interior design & architecture has stood out, and why?

While I still have many travels ahead, the Mosque Hassan II in Casablanca holds a special place in my life as an unmatched destination. I had painted a detail from a photo from google images of the Mosque when I was in school and had been dreaming to go visit and seeing it in person. I can happily say I was not disappointed when I saw it in person and nothing has beat that feeling for me so far.

Home is...

While London is my chosen home, I believe that home is truly where our fondest memories live. For me, that place is Islamabad and it will always hold a special place in my heart.
