7 Interior Design Trends for 2022

After an unsettling couple of years, the overarching trend is to create an escape from the outside world — a restful and tranquil space that informs our choices of colours, materials, layout and more.

Here are this year’s top interior design trends according to our designers, evoking cozy comfort, playful choices & luxurious upgrades.

Restorative Neutrals

Softer shades and neutrals – such as grey is having a revival in 2022. We see colours moving away from the beiges into the darker or lighter greys with additional textural elements adding depth to interiors. From matt walls to soft and velvety sofas, tones of grey will form the base for many projects, providing homeowners with spaces that feel relaxing and cosy.

Sustainable Choices

People have begun to shop more sustainably, and it’s now a priority to find the best ways to make interiors more sustainable without compromising on luxury. This mentality can include anything – from eco-friendly paint brands to gorgeous upcycled materials that can be transformed into a bespoke design piece.

Curve Appeal

Loving away from straight-lined minimalism and toward cozier interiors, our furniture is getting softer & more sculptural. A big trend for 2022 is full of round-edged, organically shaped furniture – soft lines, arcs, and curves in furniture provide an environment of comfort and calm.

Statement Lighting

Large, dramatic pendant lights and chandeliers, statement wall lamps & intriguing table & floor lamps are all part of this lightning trend. What makes the difference is the coherence between light, texture & colour which can transform a mundane space into a three-dimensional room. Good lighting should be changeable to create the preferred ambiance, & to highlight various key elements such as artwork, ceiling cornicing, decorative features.

Painted Ceilings

The trend when it comes to painting a room is something that Homes & Gardens magazine refers to as 'colour drenching' — which it describes as the process of choosing one colour and painting it across multiple surfaces in one space. As colour drenching evolves, so does the desire to dowse ceilings in magnificent hues to create a dramatic effect, help the room's boundaries recede, reduce visual noise, while creating an inviting feel within a space.

Exaggerated Proportions

Playing with scale is always a great way to keep things interesting in design &this year we see even more exaggerated proportions in everything – from statement-making lighting to sculptural-like vases & artwork.

Pedestals

While pedestals aren’t a new trend, we’re seeing more and more people incorporate them into their spaces, and we see why: pedestals can be a great way to add a new layer of material or texture in a home, fill an empty space, bring in height variation – or all of the above.
